A finance director who managed to increase the number of students at a college despite its financial problems has been rewarded in a national competition.

Ian Johnston, of Liverpool Community College, has been named Further Education College Finance Director of the Year by the Learning and Skills Council.

He was awarded the title for his work in developing a new financial strategy that was able to strike a balance between managing the college’s debt while also attracting significant new investment.

Tony Bell, director of finance at City College Manchester, and Nirmal Borkhataria, director of finance and resources, Ealing Hammersmith West London college, were named as runners-up.

The award was announced at the Association of Colleges’ annual conference in Birmingham and presented by Richard Healey, director of finance at the LSC and chair of the judging panel.
