Good marks

It has been suggested to me that the remarks attributed to me in your report on the Charter Mark scheme (TES, December 8) were derogatory of the efforts of those schools and colleges who had participated in the scheme. I had no such intention.

I was asked why so few institutions had participated in the scheme and I said that many schools believed that they already offered a high level of service and did not feel the need to commit the time and energy to this particular scheme, when there were so many claims upon them.

For those who wished to achieve formal public recognition of their standards in this area, the scheme offers a reliable assessment.
