Teachers in the District of Columbia (DC) are the latest in the United States to ratify a new contract under which they will be paid by classroom results, not seniority. The package includes a five-year 21.6 per cent increase in basic pay which will take the average salary of DC teachers from $67,000 (pound;45,692) to $81,000 (pound;55,240). By contrast, New York mayor Michael R Bloomberg said there would be no rise in pay for the city’s school teachers and principals over the next two years to avoid deep job reductions.
