Q: Is it appropriate to ask for time off to attend my boyfriend’s graduation in November? I’d hate to miss his big day but I have no idea what the general rule is regarding having time off for occasions.
A: Most schools will give you time off for your own graduation but they’ll probably think you have a bit of a cheek asking to go to a boyfriend’s, especially as a new teacher who has only just started. Out of the 365 days in a year, you are only teaching for 190 so people expect you to be in school, barring the most dire illness. You’re likely to fall victim to some of that so I’d save up some goodwill for then. I am sure that when settle you into the job you will realise how important your presence is to your pupils - and how they and your colleagues suffer when you’re not there. So, if I were you, I wouldn’t even ask.
