Gerard Kelly’s editorial was interesting (“We’ve spent too much time making governance local and not enough making it effective,” 10 June), but please give governance a break!
While we recognise that there is good practice out there, Governors Wales also recognises shortcomings in some governing bodies that are understandably cause for concern. We would, however, disagree that the current democratic stakeholder model needs to be changed to ensure more effective governance. We need to make induction training for governors and training for chairs mandatory.
Likewise, the promotion of training, support and development for governing body clerks is essential. All of these factors, which the Welsh Government is introducing through the Education (Wales) Measure 2011, will undoubtedly enhance the effectiveness of governing bodies. Perhaps others will follow suit?
Jane Morris, Director, Governors Wales.
