* The Government is to recommend boosting deputy heads’ pay next year, to recognise their role in implementing performance-related pay, as proposed in the Green Paper.

In today’s TES, Estelle Morris said she will be asking the School Teachers’ Review Body to consider deputies’ salaries in the next pay round. She is expected to repeat the message this afternoon to the Secondary Heads Association conference in Brighton.

She made the concession following lobbying from heads’ organisations. They said that the role of deputies had been ignored in the Green Paper and this year’s review body report on restructuring heads’ pay also left them out.

The pay boost recognises that deputies and senior members will be in the front line, implementing performance systems and appraising staff for pay increases.
