The Open University has been given a one-off award, in recognition of the large number of its staff, students and alumni who have volunteered to serve as school governors. The charity School Governors’ One-Stop Shop presented the award to the university, which provides more governors to schools than any other university in Britain. During 2009, 220 OU staff and students offered to become school governors. In total, there are around 300,000 places for school governors in England, with 40,000 current vacancies.
