TES on 16 November showed worrying symptoms of Gove’s disease. This affliction distorts the vision, so that interesting features can only be discerned in academies, free schools and the private sector. According to recent Department for Education statistics, there are 2,309 academies, 79 free schools and 17,835 other state-funded mainstream schools. Apart from a reference in “A touch of Eton in the East End”, I couldn’t spot a single mention of the words “community school” in your 54 pages. Please get well soon. We need a paper that gives proportionate coverage to success and innovation in the 17,000.
