England’s Education Secretary Michael Gove has run into further trouble after Cambridge University dealt a blow to the Government’s plans to kill off A-levels in their current form. Mr Gove wants to make the exams more traditional and encourage schools to abandon AS-levels. This has been rebuffed by the Cambridge colleges, because they fear it would set back efforts to make admissions fairer and to attract more state school pupils. Mr Gove has faced criticism over the demise of the school rebuilding programme in England and the speed with which he plans to turn local authority schools into independent, state-funded academies.
