THE McCrone committee also commissioned a study by consultants from PricewaterhouseCoopers to evaluate teaching grades. A 10-point scale of skills and competences was used to generate a “job weight” and pay levels were compared with occupations where similar attributes were required.
The study concluded tht, while there should be adjustments for principal teachers, assistant heads, deputes and heads, there was no need for an overall pay “catch-up”.
The consultants did, however, argue for a better market rate for teachers at the start of their careers and suggested pound;17,000, which McCrone accepted.
