More graduates are chasing fewer jobs and the situation will worsen next year as employers cut back on recruitment, a survey of companies has revealed.

The review of graduate appointments by 191 employers during 1995 has also revealed how starting salaries of new entrants, currently averaging Pounds 13,959, are likely to fall slightly in the forthcoming year - reflecting a lack of confidence in the calibre of graduates entering the job market.

With graduate numbers due to increase by 14 per cent in 1996 and employers looking to cut back further on jobs, their prospects are looking particularly bleak.
