Grammar scraps A-levels

A grammar school in Kent is claiming to be the first state school in England and Wales to scrap A-levels in favour of a diploma.

Dr Stephen Manning, head of Barton Court grammar in Canterbury, said his was the first state school he knew of to replace A-levels with the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Many schools and sixth forms offer the IB, but most either run the course alongside A-levels, or are new institutions which have only offered the diploma from the start.
