Austria - tuition fees, means-tested grants and low-interest loans.

Maximum: 100 per centsupport.

Denmark - no tuition fees, means-tested maintenance grants, loans. Maximum: 100 per cent support.

Finland - no tuition fees, means-tested grants, zero-interest loans. Max: 85 per cent support.

France - no tuition fees, means-tested grants (max: 30 per cent), loans increasing.

Germany - tuition fees only for “long-term” students in several states, means-tested grants increased, zero-interest loans. Max: 85 per cent support.

Greece - no tuition fees, grants, loans. Max: 15 per cent support.

Ireland - no tuition fees, grants. Max: 50 per cent.

Italy - tuition fees. Means-tested grants (max: 30 per cent support), students tend to live at home, loans.

Netherlands - tuition fees, grants decreasing, loans. Max: 75 per cent.

Norway - no tuition fees, grants, loans. Max: 100 per cent support.

Portugal - tuition fees, grants, (max: 75 per cent), no government loans, students tend to live at home.

Spain - tuition fees, grants available (max: 75 per cent), no government loans, students tend to live at home.

Sweden - no tuition fees, grants and zero-interest loans. Max: 100 per cent support.

UK - tuition fees, except Scotland, grants abolished (to be reinstated 2006), zero-interest loans.
