Green light to spivs obliterates FE

I READ with interest the correspondence relating to teachers’ and lecturers’ pay comparability (FE Focus, August 10). Having left FE last August after 14 years, I went on supply and obtained a temporary post at a local school.

First, when I joined FE in 1986, I gained a rise on my scale post at school just for becoming an ordinary L1 (Silver Book terms). When I left last year, I calculated that I was pound;4,000 behind what I would have had if I stayed at school in the same post.

Second, I can get pound;19.64 per hour on supply at school. I saw an advert for my old FE work which came under the “casual lecturers” category. I used to teach degree-level work and that is being touted at pound;18.26 per hour.

The changes in 1993 which gave the green light to spivs in the running of FE colleges has also witnessed its probably intended consequence of obliterating FE.
