The Department for Education and Skills is coming over all ecological.

Asked to comment on the fact that last week’s announcement about extended school days had been made before, a source said: “We’re an environmentally-friendly department - we like to recycle.”

Surprisingly, the same impulse seems to be guiding the Daily Mail. “How the war on grammars deepened the class divide,” ran a headline this week over a story about research by the LSE for the Sutton Trust. “End of grammar schools has helped widen class divisions” ran a headline two months ago.

Same research, same story. But has the divide widened or deepened? We need to know.
