GTC never asked for fees

I WAS intrigued to read (“GTC plunged into chaos over fees”, TES, July 13) that the General Teaching Council wrote to all teachers last month requesting the subscription fee. I have had nothing from the council except an acknowledgement of registration and voting papers.

I have been in favour of a GTC since before the idea was mooted in The TES. I briefed the lead speaker at my union’s annual conference about the General Medical Council, the year the union voted for a GTC. I registered as soon as possible, writing to Carol Adams, its chief executive, about matters that needed addressing (she did reply).

But I have been told nothing about the council. Were it not for TES reports, I would have concluded those I voted for have not met, or discussed anything.

If I were to be asked for pound;23, I would ask: “For what?” Michael McGowan 605 Lordship Lane Wood Green, London N22
