Three members of the General Teaching Council are standing in the election including two who are members of the investigating committee. Both are contesting Aberdeen South: Labour’s Anne Begg, principal teacher of English at Arbroath Academy, and the SNP’s Jim Towers, a former principal English teacher and his party’s education spokesman on Aberdeenshire Council.
The other GTC member is Anne Harper, a former BP executive, who is Tory candidate in Midlothian.
The independent sector educated 29 Tories, 13 Liberal Democrats, five Labour candidates and four Nationalists. Fourteen Tories, 10 SNP candidates and five Liberal Democrats were students in further education colleges.
The new Commons could see the first former teacher and pupil combination if Paul Curran, the Solicitor General, is returned for the normally safe Tory seat of Eastwood. His maths teacher at St Augustine’s High in Edinburgh was Dennis Canavan, the Labour candidate in Falkirk West.
