Hail those student heroes

We already know that lecturers are rescuing pupils under the Government’s 14-plus policy of getting the “vocationally-inclined” into colleges.

But I hear FE students have been doing some rescuing of a more dramatic kind. Congratulations must go to 18-year-old Jo Scriven, from Long Road sixth-form college in Cambridge. She was was crossing the city’s Clare College Bridge when she heard the cries of a tourist who had fallen from his punt. In she jumped and plucked the man to safety.

And a group of students from South East Derbyshire college last month saved a group of children who strayed too far out to sea.
