THE HALTON College scandal (TES, April 16) results from the way the college has been governed and managed. It is the responsibility of the recently resigned principal and deputy principal and of the college corporation - not of the lecturing staff. It is grossly unfair for committed lecturers to be threatened with redundancy to pay for the mistakes of those who are escaping scot-free.
The principal and deputy principal were suspended a year ago. Huge sums of money have been spent on their non-productive salaries since then.
Halton is not a one-off. A few colleges have major problems. It is time to review the structure of further education, including the role of the Further Education Funding Council.
