‘Hamlet’ tops the class

English teachers say Shakespeare’s Hamlet is the most popular text to teach at A-level and Ulysses by James Joyce is the least favourite, according to a survey published today by examination board OCR. Authors Ian McEwan and Gabriel Garcia Marquez are also held in high regard by teachers. OCR hopes that its new English literature A-level specification will cater for further diversity within the subject.
