* Andy Borthwick (“Bit-part players with a huge burden”, TES, February 18) is wrong to propose that governors should be hand-picked from “senior business personnel”.
This would remove vast numbers of dedicated governors concerned about the education offered by “their” local school.
It would also be socially divisive, since many schools may not have a ready supply of accountants and lawyers to be recruited. Finally, it is challenged by almost all the research, which quotes heads as saying that what they most value in school governors is not their skill sets but their commitment to the school.
