Hands off right to retire at 60

WE are extremely concerned about the proposals by the Government to reform teachers’ and other public service workers’ pension schemes.

In particular we are angry about the proposal to raise the pension age from 60 to 65. We believe that anybody who has worked in the profession for nearly 40 years should be entitled to a full pension at 60.

We view the proposed changes as being detrimental to our futures, and an attempt to cut costs at our expense. To recruit and retain staff in the profession, it is important that these proposals are withdrawn and our current pension entitlements retained.

These proposals constitute a serious attack on the future living standards of all public sector employees and a serious erosion of our conditions of service.

We urge all the trade unions in education to form a united campaign to lobby the Government to withdraw these proposals.
