DEVELOPING SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE IN DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY SERIES. Developing and Communicating Ideas. Systems and Control. Resistant Materials: Structures. Aspects of Food Science and Nutrition. By Gwyneth Owen-Jackson and John Myerson. Trentham Books pound;9.95 each

Subject knowledge for design and technology in schools has few finite bounds. As new materials, processes and components become available, teachers and pupils will be keen to exploit them in projects and coursework.

However, this does not imply that knowledge is unworthy of definition, rather that key elements and concepts should be understood by all. A recent joint initiative from the Open University and Trentham Books has resulted in this series of compact, well-structured books for the new modular specialist secondary teacher training qualification. All books have been awarded the Teacher Training Agency kite mark and meet the knowledge required to teach the subject in the minimum competencies developed by DATA.

Although intended for students on initial teacher training courses, the books should also interest practising teachers looking for a handy reference guide. They could be used by students as pre-course reading, consulted throughout a training course or used during school placements. Contents are firmly linked to the English Order.

Developing Planning and Communicating Ideas provides an introduction to designing and the processes associated with creative endeavour. As the teaching of design skills has been identified in several recent surveys as a weakness in many schools, this book is timely. It avoids the mistake of considering designing as a single, linear process. The author rightly identifies the sequences of repeated cycles of activities that are a major feature of design processes.

Systems and Control covers the basics of electronic control systems including logic systems, microprocessor systems and basic electronics. Structures includes sections on forces and frameworks sufficient for teaching up to the end of key stage 3. A fourth book, Aspects of Food Technology, is also available. All contain questions on the text (with answers) and some include websites and further reading.
