A sexual-health organisation has offered teachers a crib sheet clarifying that condoms prevent pregnancy and a girl can get pregnant the first time she has sex.

Protect Yourself, a resource pack produced by Brook, the sexual-health charity for young people, includes 21 truefalse statements for teachers’

use during sex-education lessons to debunk playground myths. These include “a girl can’t get pregnant the first time she has sex”, “all young people are sexually active”, “young people under 16 can buy condoms” and “using a condom can stop a boy making a girl pregnant”.

Dilys Went, of Brook, said: “Teachers often have insufficient training and sex education is given less priority than it should. I often meet teacher-training students who do not know the answers straight away.”
