The Scottish Secretary had a busy day on Friday, including opening the new offices of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools in Edinburgh. Calum MacLeod, the council’s chairman, acknowledged that Michael Forsyth could not stay long. “His time is limited,” MacLeod explained.

“Would you like to rephrase that?” replied the election-conscious holder of a wafer-thin majority.
