Never one to shirk a comment, Judith Gillespie, development manager of the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, must be thinking she is doing something right.

After reported criticism of teachers in state schools sending their kids to independent schools, she was denounced by the press - OK, a Scotsman columnist - as an “unreconstructed Marxist”.

A day or so later that well-known, unreconstructed socialist revolutionary, one Tommy Sheridan, attacked Gillespie for being unrepresentative and out of touch with parents. The SPTC had committed the great sin of reporting that a majority of parents did not support Comrade Sheridan’s call for free school meals.

Marxist one day, class traitor the next.
