Lewis had its annual music and culture festival in July (TESS, July 13); this month, it’s the turn of neighbouring Harris whose week-long arts festival began on Monday. The highlight of the festival, established 15 years ago to promote the area’s heritage and traditions, is the Harris tweed evening, held at the Harris Hotel in Tarbert. The event tells the story of Harris tweed from fleece to finished garment. Dyers, spinners and weavers demonstrate their skills and there are stories and songs, including those used in the cloth waulking process. A leaflet will guide visitors around studios, workshops and showrooms.
