Have you noticed?

Last week we held our annual meeting. We had an interesting and productive evening, discussing the annual report and exploring the issues highlighted by our annual survey of parents.

The main areas which scored poorly this year were music, sport and behaviour management. We had explained current practice and proposed developments in the annual report and the parents at the meeting had lots of constructive suggestions which we shall incorporate into our development plan.

Parents liked the idea of a regular termly report from the governors on their activities in response to the low score in the survey on parentgovernor communication. The parents were articulate, supportive of the school and full of ideas. Unfortunately, there were only eight of them.

It’s not just the low number that is discouraging - the faces are so familiar. Two of this year’s attendees work at the school and most of the others are stalwarts of the parent-teacher association - usually seen manning tea urns or serving in the school shop. There was one man I didn’t know. The chair of the PTA needs new members and I need a new parent governor, but he slipped away while we were squabbling over him. Probably only came to read the meter.
