A headteacher slapped a pupil when he refused to stop smoking at school, a court has heard.

Southampton magistrates were told Eve Ritchie-Fallon confronted the 15-year-old in the grounds of the Forest Education Centre, Dibden Purlieu, Hampshire. An exchange followed in which the 57-year-old allegedly ripped a pair of earmuffs from his head and slapped him. The teenager, who had previously suffered a broken jaw, said the alleged assault caused his face to throb and he had to seek hospital aid.

Ms Ritchie-Fallon denies a charge of assault.
