Head to head

Ken Greig, new man at the top in Hutcheson's Grammar School, took his life in his hands when he wrote to John Wilson, director of education in East Renfrewshire, Scotland's top-performing education authority.

For not only did the bold Hutchie heidie, as he is known, introduce himself in his epistle, but he also suggested that he would like to visit East Ren schools. Furthermore, if possible, the director might be able to identify some "brighter" pupils in each school of the sort who would like to come to Hutchie.

The reply from the "outstanding" (that was HMIE speaking) Baron of Barrhead is believed to have been very much to the point and terse.
