A headteacher has quit on the eve of a strike ballot by staff who blame her for a dramatic breakdown in discipline at their school.

Hillary Sargeant, headteacher of Barr Beacon secondary school in Walsall, resigned on December 23 after months of bitter disputes with teachers.

Ms Sargeant is due to take a secondment to either Serco or the National Remodelling Team, helping implement the workforce agreement.

Staff claimed that she had failed properly to address a series of incidents over more than a year, including one where they say pupils placed trip-wires on stairways and corridors.
