Head shortage gets worse

Record numbers of schools are searching for a new headteacher and the staffing crisis may get worse, according to a recruitment analyst.

In the first three months of this year, 1,340 schools in England and Wales advertised for a new head, nearly 200 more than in the same period last year.

Professor John Howson, a director of Education Data Surveys, which conducted the study, said the number of adverts was a new record.
