A headteacher has won his battle to get the Government to change its mind over a life-saving vaccine. Scott Fewster, head of Whitehall primary school,on the outskirts of Leicester, launched his campaign last April after losing his two-year-old son to meningitis.

Scott and his wife Maria say that Lachlan would not have died had a vaccine called Prevenar been available on the NHS. All children in America are vaccinated with the drug.

Now Health Secretary John Reid has announced that national trials of the vaccine will begin throughout Britain later this year. At present, Prevenar is used in this country only when a child has been diagnosed as having a high risk of meningitis because of deficiencies such as a weak immune system.
