Members of a cross-party school’s sub-committee agreed last Friday on new proposals for the reorganisation of secondary schools in Cardiff.

Three secondary schools are earmarked for closure under the plans. However, it emerged this week that two more primary schools are to be axed but more are to be investigated.

The plans have been motivated by a vision of viable, successful schools that are able to deliver a wide curriculum, mirroring moves towards community focused schools. By reducing surplus capacity, the school population will be more evenly distributed, with more children attending their local schools.

It will also give the council the chance to invest millions in new schools and upgrade existing ones. But the council says the plans were drawn up under the threat that failure to do so would result in loss of future funding for improvements.
