* Heads are being encouraged to turn inspector under a new scheme designed to help schools evaluate themselves. The scheme, to be launched by Ofsted later this month, aims to help heads and senior managers evaluate standards, the quality of teaching and the quality of leadership and management in their own schools.

The scheme has already been piloted in Newcastle, Lambeth and Derbyshire, and will be made available nationally.
