Heads fear extinction

Primary headteachers fear their jobs might be scrapped and their schools run by chief executives of secondary schools.

Tim Benson, head of Nelson primary in East Ham, London, said educational leaders were already replacing teachers with classroom assistants.

"Create a huge comprehensive with its chief executive and satellite primaries with leading teachers in all directing the work of the army of teaching assistants," he said. "Hey presto, recruitment crisis solved."
