A headteacher who banned pupils as young as three from taking off their jumpers despite sweltering temperatures has been defended by her local authority.
Pupils at Lumley Medway infants, in Chester-le-Street, Durham, were told they could take off their jumpers only if their parents gave written permission.
Joan Lawlan, headteacher, said the policy was designed to protect children from sun-related illnesses, including sunstroke. A spokesman for Durham county council said: “It is nothing more than any responsible parent would do.”
