A headteacher fiddled test papers because she was under pressure to meet targets after a series of poor inspection reports. Helen Quick left her post at Wyndham Primary School, in Newcastle, last week after she confessed to altering answers in maths and science papers taken by 11-year-olds. It was the head herself who brought the cheating to light.

Phil Turner, Newcastle’s director of education, said: “This incident has come as a great shock. Miss Quick was a very trusted person with an unblemished record. She immediately regretted her actions and brought them to our attention. It is an indication of the pressure she thought that she was under to get good results.”
