Double the number of headteachers in Wales are able to speak Welsh compared to the general population, figures suggest. The General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) estimates that at least 42 per cent of headteachers and 32 per cent of the country’s 38,770 registered teachers are able to speak the language. Figures from the 2001 census found that 21 per cent of people in Wales were fluent speakers. GTCW chief executive Gary Brace said the figures showed schools were in a strong position to lead Welsh language development.
