East Lothian Council’s work in promoting cycling and scootering to school has received a national award.

Dunbar Primary has more than 200 pupils who come to school by bicycle or scooter - but that very success created the problem of scooters littering the playground.

So the school’s janitor, Ibby Robertson, designed his own prototype of a scooter rack in the playground.

The council is now using people carrying out community service orders to reproduce the racks for other schools in their own authority and elsewhere. The racks cost #163;50 each and are made out of locally- sourced wood.

The Broxap Award for outstanding achievement in cycle promotion was received by East Lothian’s cycling promotion officer, Iain Reid, earlier this month.

Barry Turner, cabinet member for planning and the environment, said: “It’s fantastic that East Lothian has won this prestigious national award for promoting cycling. Ibby’s racks illustrate how innovation linked with teamworking can really bear fruit.

“This really is an award for the whole council, from the transportation team who create the cycling infrastructure, our community service team who are making Ibby’s racks, and education, who have been promoting the benefits of cycling and road safety to all our pupils.”
