More than 800 schools and youth groups are encouraging youngsters to be more active through jogging.
The junior jogscotland programme, sponsored by Scottish Co-op, uses fun and accessible running-based games to encourage all children to get active. It has been designed for use in schools and youth groups, with simple directions to organise a 30 to 45-minute jogging session. The games have been designed with the 7-11 age group in mind, but can be easily adapted for different age groups and abilities. The programme is not about creating top athletes, but encouraging every child to enjoy physical activity.
Nicola Sturgeon, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, visited St Brendan’s Primary in Glasgow earlier this month to see the programme in action. “Evidence shows that healthy patterns of behaviour can stay with a child for life,” she said. “It is important that we continue to encourage everyone, especially young people, to realise the benefits of physical activity and incorporate it into their daily routine.”
