(Photograph) - Healthy options: pupils at Catherine infant school in Leicester enjoy free milk and fruit.

One is good for your bones and teeth, the other is good for skin and hair.

But which should nursery schools offer - milk or fruit?

The Government proposes giving nurseries the choice of swapping their free milk for a piece of fruit.

Health campaigners insist that both milk and fruit should be provided but the Government says the extra cost - pound;20 million - would be unacceptable.

At the moment, all children who attend a nursery or other form of day care for at least two hours a day are entitled to one third of a pint of milk a day.

All children in infant classes in state schools are entitled to a free piece of fruit a day.
