Artie Beat is a vermilion animated heart with a big smile. In the story of Artie Beat’s Picnic, key stage 1 readers meet him and his friends as they choose the right foods for their outing. Visiting a vegetable patch, a fruit stall, a corner shop, a supermarket and a baker’s, they have to decide which are the healthy alternatives on offer. Lifting up a flap on the page reveals the best options, while an ironic bird quips about the sugary and creamy temptations that are rejected. Artie Beat’s Picnic is free, though a donation of pound;3 is welcome, from the British Heart Foundation.
