Helen Gray of the English department at Graveney school in the London borough of Wandsworth is used to her pupils winning prizes for creative writing: now she’s joint winner of London Metropolitan University’s writing competition for teachers. With Julian Bell of Godolphin and Latymer School, in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, she wins a week on an Arvon Foundation writing course. The competition, judged by Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, is expanding to take in all primary and secondary schools in London next year. Schools will be sent entry formsin May 2005. The presentation today also sees the launch of Writing Together’s Schools Challenge to support schools working with writers, backed by eight pages in today’s TESTeacher magazine on how to organise and fund a successful writer’s residency in your school.
