Multilingual leaflets for parents don’t always reach their target audience, some of whom may not be literate in their mother tongue.

The London Secondary School Guide is a 30-minute DVD, developed by participants in London Challenge Community Forums, that can be watched in English, Sylheti, Somali, Turkish and Urdu; topics include attendance, school reports, homework and “dealing with problems”. The emphasis throughout is on how parents can support their children. The DVD has been distributed to all inner-London secondary schools. Copies are also available from the DfES Publications Centre. Video streaming and fact sheets are at www.parentscentre.gov.uk
