According to UNEP, precious reefs are being damaged by pollution, climate change, coastal development and leisure activities. UNEP is working with the Kenya Wildlife Service on four demonstration sites as part of a global project called the Iternational Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN), supported by a grant of pound;10 million from the United Nations Foundation. UNEP hopes its pioneering initiative in East Africa will offer important lessons for reef management elsewhere.
The conservation charity WWF-UK, which also supports the WorldWatch series, has also produced a report on coral reefs. It will be one of many organisations promoting World Oceans Day on June 8, an event highlighting damage caused by climate change.
