Q

This small independent school is likely to close and we shall have to make an announcement soon. We know that the staff will become redundant, but what do we do if parents withdraw their children before the closure date?

A

One would like to hope that the arrangements you make for your pupils to be transferred to another school will give the parents sufficient confidence to leave them with you, so ensuring a smooth transition.

Even if they do not, this cannot affect the position of your staff, whose redundancy will be timed to relate to their contractual entitlement to notice. If it turns out that their classes have disappeared early, this will not remove your responsibility to honour the terms of their contracts.
