Born in Switzerland, Henry Fuseli first become a clergyman, then came to London as a translator and book illustrator. Joshua Reynolds encouraged him to paint. He spent eight years in Rome teaching himself, mainly by copying Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. He became Professor of Painting and Keeper of the Royal Academy.
