The cost of building a new secondary school in Lerwick has rocketed to Pounds 48 million, an increase of pound;18 million, according to the latest estimates. The rising costs for a new Anderson High is jeopardising the council’s capital spending programme, according to councillors.

Designers have blamed the increase in costs on an overheated UK economy, inflation in the construction industry, and a lack of interest from contractors who see Shetland as a high-risk area.
