Michael Faraday and Benjamin Franklin immediately lend themselves to studying famous people for KS1 History. Franklin flying a kite in an electrical storm must surely be a good way to advise young students on safety! At KS2 students could be asked to list a range of everyday items which they use at home or in school. Then they could consider whether these items were used 100, 200 or more years ago. They could then itemise which items were unused previously because they depended on electricity and which are new for other reasons. Electricity naturally has its greatest impact in the 20th century. Students at KS3-4 could look into the impact of technology powered by electricity across the 20th century. A good example would be to assess the contribution of electricity and electrical goods to the US’s Roaring Twenties.
